Anna Katharine Green, nata nel 1846 e morta nel 1935, è stata una scrittrice e una poetessa americana. È stata una delle prime scrittrici di “detective fiction” e si è affermata per la creazione di storie legalmente accurate e ben congegnate. Green è stata definita “the mother of the detective novel“.
Green ebbe una precoce ambizione a scrivere versi romantici e corrispose con Ralph Waldo Emerson. Quando la sua poesia non ebbe riconoscimenti scrisse il suo primo e più noto romanzo “The Leavenworth Case” nel 1878, lodata da Wilkie Collins e hit dell’anno. Divenne un’autrice “bestselling” pubblicando circa 40 libri.
Ellen Higgins, docente di un corso su donne e detective fiction all’università di Albany, ha tenuto un discorso su “Le rivali di Sherlock Holmes” a una conferenza internazionale su Sherlock Holmes al Bennington College nel 1994 con una dissertazione che offriva una visione femminista “revisionist” di Sherlock. Higgins ha studiato l’opera di Green che pubblicò con The Leavenworth Case e che divenne una best-seller un decennio prima che Arthur Conan Doyle pubblicasse la sua prima storia con Holmes.
A Green si attribuisce il merito di aver dato la sua forma classica alla detective fiction e di aver sviluppato le serie con un detective protagonista.
Il suo personaggio principale era il detective Ebenezer Gryce della New York Metropolitan Police Force ma in tre romanzi viene assistito dalla zitella ficcanaso nella società Amelia Butterworth, il prototipo per miss Marple, miss Silver e altre creazioni. Inventò anche la “girl detective”: nel personaggio di Violet Strange, una debuttante con una vita segreta da segugio.
Come scrive la giornalista Kathy Hickman “Green caratterizzò il genere mystery con i tratti distintivi che avrebbero influenzato scrittori come Agatha Christie e Conan Doyle fino agli autori contemporanei di gialli pieni di suspense”. Oltre a creare la zitella anziana e la giovane segugia gli strumenti innovativi delle sue trame includevano cadaveri nelle librerie, ritagli di quotidiani come indizi, l’inchiesta del medico legale e i/le testimoni esperti/e. una volta la Yale Law School usò i suoi libri per dimostrare quanto possa essere dannoso fidarsi delle testimonianze circostanziali. Scritto nel 1878 il suo primo libro “The Leavenworth Case: A Lawyer’s Story” provocò un dibattito al senato della Pennsylvania se il libro poteva essere realmente scritto da una donna.
Green fu, in qualche modo, una donna progressista per il suo tempo, riuscendo in un genere dominato da scrittori, ma non approvava molte delle femministe sue contemporanee e si oppose al suffragio femminile.
Nel 1884 Green sposò l’attore e progettista di stufe, in seguito celebre creatore di arredamenti, Charles Rohlfs che era più giovane di lei di sette anni, che portò in scena una drammatizzazione di “The Leavenworth Case” di sua moglie. Dopo che la sua carriera teatrale fallì divenne un creatore di arredamenti nel 1897 e Green collaborò con lui in alcuni dei suoi progetti. Ebbero una figlia e due figli. Green morì nel 1935 a Buffalo, NY, all’età di 88 anni.
